Comprehensive Network Installation Instructions

After installing the program you will need to unlock the eBooks using your licence code (beginning with READ-XXXX-...) before you can use them.

This is a one off procedure that can be done from any client PC.

Unlocking an eBook for a number of users, for instance 5, will allow up to 5 computers to access the eBook. This is done on a first come first served basis meaning subsequent computers will not be able to access the eBook once the licences are used up. It is possible to transfer licences between computers (with one limitation: the PC giving up the licence cannot access the same eBook for a week).

The licence code will only allow you to unlock the eBooks that you have purchased.
Additional eBooks that are included on the disc cannot be unlocked unless you purchase them.

System Requirements – client machines:

  • Windows XP SP2/SP3, Windows Vista, Windows 7 and Windows 8, 8.1 & 8.1 update (except RT Tablets) Operating System (32 bits or 64 bits).
  • Microsoft .NET 2.0, 3.0 or 3.5 (administrative rights on the computer are required to install or upgrade .NET).
.NET 2.0/3.x is preinstalled on Windows Vista and Windows 7.
  • System Requirements – server (shared folder):

  • The network version needs to be installed on a shared network folder where the users have write permission.
The type of file server hosting the shared network folder does not matter (on small networks, it can be a normal workstation).
  • At least 5GB of free hard disc space
  • A DVD-drive to copy the files to the shared folder (the DVD is not protected so the files can be transferred via a USB memory stick or across the network - just make sure to select all the files, including the hidden files).
  • Installation of the network version

    A) Server-side:

  • Before updating it is recommended that all client machines stop running the application otherwise file locking could occur which would prevent the update of the application and/or the data.
On a Windows server, you can use Server Manager > Roles > File Services > Share and Storage Management to access the 'Manage Sessions' option and see if users are connected, who they are and disconnect them if appropriate.

  • Update or first installation: in both cases, you can use the small utility CopyUtility.exe on the DVD to transfer the files from the DVD to your shared folder.
The utility will update the previous installation (if found) while preserving the data files otherwise it will do a full new install of the Seamanship Library.
The utility will also try to give full access to all the network users to the installation folder (this is necessary for the program to work).
To update the content (i.e. install or update eBooks) automatically with the Copy Utility, you need to have the Microsoft .NET 2.0/3.x framework installed on the machine running this utility. Alternatively, you can install/update the content by running the application from any client machine and using the import function (top left toolbar icon). Note that Seamanship Library contains a lot of documents (the DVD is full) so copying the files will take some time (10 to 20 minutes, possibly more with a slow DVD drive).

  • Update (manually):

    1. Update the application.
Delete all files and folders in the shared folder EXCEPT:
              \Seamanship Library\Downloads
              \Seamanship Library\Lic
              \Seamanship Library\Packages

The files starting with 'AbsolutePath' (if you have been told to create them as part of a techhelp)

Copy the content of the DVD folder \Seamanship Library - UPDATE into the shared folder \Seamanship Library.

Confirm that you want to Merge the following folders:
              Packages
              BD (x3)
              ModulesList

Confirm that you want to Copy and Replace the following files:
              catalogue-slib.pdf
              eBookReaderManual.pdf
              Modules.xml
              Modules.xsd
              Schedule.pdf

    2. Update the content.
      To update the eBooks manually:
      - start the eBook Reader from the server or any client PC (Microsoft .NET 2.0/3.x framework needs to be installed on the machine)
      - go to Import eBook (top left toolbar icon)
      - select the DVD \ebkfiles folder as source
      - select ‘Install book(s) for sharing on network’
      - click on [Select All] and click [OK].

    3. Instead of 1. and 2., you can use CopyUtility.exe.

  • First installation (manually):

    1. Install the application.
Copy the whole folder \Seamanship Library - FULL from the DVD to the server or the workstation that you want to use for sharing files. Rename this DVD folder to \Seamanship Library on the server.
Don't forget that if you copy manually files from a DVD, the files attributes may be set to Read-only.
To allow users to bookmark pages and create annotations, you need to make sure that the following files are writable:
          \Seamanship Library\Packages\ANNOTATIONS\Annotations.sdf and
          \Seamanship Library\Packages\BOOKMARKS\Bookmarks.xml and BookmarksSchema.xsd.

    2. Share the newly created \Seamanship Library folder.
Give write permission to all the Seamanship Library users for \Seamanship Library and all the subfolders.
For help on setting up a shared folder and permissions, see Additional Info - SettingUpASharedFolder.htm on the DVD.

    3. Install the content.
      To install the eBooks manually:
      - start the eBook Reader from the server or any client PC (Microsoft .NET 2.0/3.x framework needs to be installed on the machine)
      - go to Import eBook (top left toolbar icon)
      - select the DVD \ebkfiles folder as source
      - select ‘Install book(s) for sharing on network’
      - click on [Select All] and click [OK].

    4. Instead of 1., 2. and 3., you can use CopyUtility.exe.
  •

    B) Client-side:

After updating the server, there is nothing to do on the client-side. The following is only for the first installation:

  • After installation on the server, go to each client PC and create a shortcut to eBook Reader.exe located in the shared folder \Seamanship Library that you have just created on the server.
Note: do not create a shortcut to Start_Library.exe or SeamanshipLibrary.exe. These files are only present for compatibility with older installations.
  • On XP SP2/SP3, install .NET 2.0 if missing (error ‘The application failed to initialize properly’ or ‘To run this application, you first must install .NET Framework v2.0’).
.NET 2.0 installer is on the DVD in \Utilities\Dotnet.
.NET version checker is on the DVD in \Utilities\Dotnet\Version Check.
  • If you don’t have .NET 3.5 SP1, you may need to adjust the .NET security to allow the program to run from a shared drive (error ‘Request for the permission of type ... failed’).
Open the shared folder \Seamanship Library and run DotNetSecurity2.exe from this folder.
For more information, read Additional Info - DotNetSecurity.htm on the DVD.
  • On Windows 8 or 8.1, .NET 3.5 needs to be installed. See \Utilities\Dotnet\Windows 8 - ReadMe.txt on the DVD for more details.
  • Before you can use an eBook for the first time you must obtain an unlock code from Witherby Publishing Group Ltd.
Follow the on-screen instructions on how to unlock the eBooks. The licence code begins with READ-XXXX-XXXX-XXXX-XXXX.
Seamanship Library includes free eBooks that do not require unlocking. Run the application and select the padlock icon on the left toolbar to show these eBooks (useful for testing).
  • Uninstall

Server-side: just delete the shared folder

    Client-side: delete the desktop shortcut.

After installing the program you will need to unlock the eBooks using your licence code (beginning with READ-XXXX-...) before you can use them.
